Retinal vs. Retinol: What’s the Difference and Which One Is Right for Your Skin?

SkinFX is celebrating Retinoid Week Septmeber 14th-18th

If you’ve spent any time looking at skincare products, you’ve probably heard of retinol. But lately, another ingredient has been showing up more and more: retinal.

No, that isn’t a typo.

Retinol and retinal (also called retinaldehyde) are both forms of vitamin A and belong to the larger family of ingredients called retinoids. Both can be incredible additions to a skincare routine, particularly when your goals include smoother texture, clearer skin, improved pigmentation and reducing the appearance of fine lines and other signs of aging.

But they aren't exactly the same.

And according to SkinFX Master Aestheticians Madi and Karli, understanding the difference doesn't need to be nearly as complicated as the internet can make it sound.

“People hear ‘stronger’ and automatically think it means ‘better.’ With skincare, that’s not always true. The best product is the one that’s right for your skin and that you can use consistently.” — Madi, Master Aesthetician

So, let's break it down.

Retinol vs. Retinal: What's Actually the Difference?

The easiest way to understand the difference is to look at what happens after you put these ingredients on your skin.

Ultimately, vitamin A needs to be converted into retinoic acid, the biologically active form that your skin can use.

Think of it like this:

RETINOL → RETINAL → RETINOIC ACID

That means retinol is two conversion steps away from retinoic acid, while retinal is only one step away.

That one step matters.

Retinol: The One You Probably Already Know

Retinol has been a skincare staple for years, and for good reason.

Because it requires two conversion steps before becoming retinoic acid, its effects tend to be more gradual. That can make retinol a great choice for someone who is new to vitamin A, someone with more sensitive skin, or someone who is already using a retinol product consistently and getting great results.

And if that's you, don't assume you need to change something simply because retinal is getting more attention.

“If your skin loves your retinol and you’re seeing results, that matters. Skincare isn’t about constantly chasing the newest or strongest product.” — Karli, Master Aesthetician

Retinal: One Step Closer

Retinal, also known as retinaldehyde, is one step further along in the vitamin A conversion process.

Because retinal only needs one conversion to become retinoic acid, it offers a more direct pathway to the active form of vitamin A than retinol.

That can make retinal an exciting option for patients who want to take their skincare routine to the next level.

But here's the important part: retinal isn't automatically the right choice for everyone simply because it is closer to retinoic acid.

Your skin barrier, sensitivity, current routine, goals and other treatments all need to be considered.

“We don't want you using something just because someone on social media said you need it. We want to know what your skin needs, what you’re already using and what we’re actually trying to accomplish.” — Madi

What Can Retinoids Do for Your Skin?

There's a reason we talk about vitamin A so much at SkinFX.

A well-formulated retinoid can help support healthy skin cell turnover and collagen production while improving the appearance of several common skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Uneven texture

  • Hyperpigmentation and sun damage

  • Breakouts and clogged pores

  • Dullness

  • Visible signs of aging

The key words, though, are consistent use.

This isn't typically an ingredient you use twice and wake up with completely different skin. Like many of the things we do at SkinFX, the goal is long-term improvement.

“Some of the best skin transformations we see aren't from doing one aggressive thing. They're from doing the right things consistently over time.” — Karli

More Isn't Always Better

This may be one of our most important SkinFX skincare philosophies.

You can buy an amazing retinoid, but if you're combining it with too many other active ingredients, irritating your skin barrier, skipping moisturizer and forgetting your SPF, you're probably not setting your skin up for success.

Your entire routine matters.

Your cleanser matters.

Your moisturizer matters.

Your other active ingredients matter.

And your sunscreen absolutely matters.

How you introduce a retinoid matters, too. Depending on your skin and the product, we may recommend starting slowly and increasing frequency as your skin adjusts.

“We'd rather have you use the right product a few nights a week and love your skin than use something too aggressive every night because you think you have to.” — Madi

So, Which One Should You Choose?

Here's the part where we give you the slightly annoying skincare answer:

It depends.

But that's actually a good thing.

Your skin isn't the same as your friend's skin, your sister's skin or the influencer whose skincare routine keeps appearing on your Instagram feed.

Your age, skin type, sensitivity, pigmentation, acne, lifestyle, other skincare products and aesthetic treatments can all influence what we recommend.

For some patients, that's retinol.

For others, it's retinal.

For someone else, we may look at their skin and decide that neither should be the priority right now.

“There is no prize for having the longest skincare routine. We want every product on your counter to have a reason for being there.” — Karli

And that's really the SkinFX approach.

You Shouldn't Need a Chemistry Degree to Wash Your Face

Retinol. Retinal. Retinoids. Peptides. Growth factors. Vitamin C. Hyaluronic acid. Exosomes. Acids.

We get it.

Skincare can become overwhelming very quickly.

And buying another product isn't always the answer.

At SkinFX, we'd rather look at your skin, hear what bothers you, learn what you're already using and understand what you're hoping to accomplish.

Then we can help you put together a routine that actually makes sense.

“Our job isn't to sell you the most skincare. It's to help you understand your skin and give you a plan that will actually help you reach your goals.” — Madi

Maybe retinal is exactly what your routine has been missing.

Maybe you should stick with your retinol.

Maybe you need to simplify your routine before adding anything else.

That's why we offer complimentary skincare consultations.

Come see one of our SkinFX skincare experts, Karli or Madi. They'll take a look at your skin, talk through your current routine and help you determine what makes sense for you.

Because when it comes to great skin, stronger isn't always better, and more isn't always better.

The right products, used the right way, consistently? That's where the magic happens.
